We are seeking a Research and Development Scientist who can clearly demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the global materials industry combined with proven research management experience in a commercially orientated environment.
This role within the Company offers the successful candidate the opportunity for continual professional development, occasional international travel, and stimulating applications research work in several key material sectors within a growing global market.
Job Specification & Qualifications
- Post Doctorate – PhD in a relevant subject – ideally Research and Development Material Science / Metallurgy but chemical engineering, physical chemistry maybe considered.
- Job role reportable to Research and Technology Manager.
- Must be seeking a long-term role in a growing Commercial / R&D environment.
- Will be a team member of PSI Research & Development, new systems projects, spanning both Government and Corporate funded contracts.
- Technical / Scientific support of technical sales on specific applications including PSI rapid solidification equipment.
- Represent PSI during conferences, video Team’s meetings and overseas exhibitions.
- Will manage the ongoing critical analysis review of PSI technology and products to ensure optimum performance and cost benefits.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills to facilitate close working relationships with Customer, funding partners and PSI personnel.
- Demonstrable ability to work consistently under times of pressure.
- A self-motivated personality, with the drive to achieve excellence in all activities undertaken.
- The role may also include other tasks and duties that may be required as directed by the Research and Development Manager.
The role is predominantly office based but may involve occasional UK travel and short overseas visits in support of our worldwide customer base.

Salary: | IRO – £32,500.00 depending on experience. |

SENIOR MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the interpretation of technical specification requirements, Engineering detailed design, CAD modelling and production of all relevant technical documentation.
Job Specification & Qualifications
- Applying a minimum of five years engineering knowledge and experience to enable the competent and effective design of PSI systems / equipment.
- Application of professional design skills, using PSI licensed Autodesk Inventor and Vault 3D modelling software while ensuring safe orderly storage of requisite drawing files.
- Designing all types of equipment and systems for Vacuum, Pressure, Water, Hydraulic, Pneumatic, High pressure Gas and Induction heating.
- Awareness of European pressure standards and directives and critical pressure safety systems and system CE approval process.
- In conjunction with Project Engineering working to agreed deadlines with a focussed approach to given tasks.
- Active senior team member will contribute to project development with diligent positive approach to challenging situations.
- Production of Bills of Materials – containing sub-assemblies, components and purchased items.
- Application of the PSI Design office practices with a sound understanding of Standard Procedures.
- Actively participate and train other team members in problem solving tasks with the Design Office Team.
- The ability to actively engage in technical knowledge building tasks and participate in any training requirements that the company deems to be necessary.

ENGINEERING ESTIMATOR
Role Description
An experienced engineer to lead the company’s purchasing and costing requirements for large capital plant projects, ensuring all client orders / contracts are delivered within agreed cost budgets.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will report to the Design Office Manager and will:
- Manage and lead the company’s Purchasing function, including Request for Quotations (RFQ’s) purchase order generation working with the existing Access database system and with any future ERP / MRP System
- Negotiate and manage subcontract work requirements according to our Production / Project planning needs
- Manage and lead Supply relations with existing, including expansion of Supplier base to support the company’s requirements.
- Manage and lead Supplier relations, investigate, develop, and negotiate with future new potential suppliers according to the needs of Sales and development opportunities.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, in writing and orally both internally and externally with suppliers and sub-contractors.
- Understand and interpret correctly complex technical engineering drawings and specifications of complex capital plant.
- Coordinate with the Sales team by preparing and maintaining product sales costing schedules – estimating by using technical experience, know-how and interfacing with future suppliers.
- Coordinate with the Finance team over on-going project costs to completion – estimating by using technical experience, know-how and interfacing with future suppliers.
- Work closely with Design Engineers and Production Managers to coordinate and plan requirements according to project / contract deadlines.
- Apply significant manufacturing industrial technical knowledge within the areas of high-pressure gas, water cooling, induction heating, and vacuum engineering disciplines.
- Deliver projects parts according to agreed budget costs and lead times.
- Develop a coordinated approach to the areas of buying, scheduling, and cost management.
- Be able, by virtue of long engineering experience, to advise junior design engineers on practical material and component choices.
- Have a clear concise understanding and application of cost / design management process tools and as part of the personal development plan in time be able to prepare detailed sales costings.

PRODUCTION TECHNICIAN
The Production Technician is part of the team responsible for the operation of the atomising equipment for the manufacture of metal powders. This equipment uses induction melting in and enclosed chamber which is in a vacuum or inert atmosphere. Then high pressure inert gas is used to “atomise” a molten metal stream into metal powder. The powder is then sieved and blended prior to packing.
Job Specification & Qualifications
- Working with the Production Team to fulfil production orders for metal powder.
- Safe loading of raw material into the induction furnace.
- Melting, pouring and atomising of metal alloys.
- Cleaning of the atomiser and components to a high standard.
- Operation of the Atomiser through PLC.
- Carry out Planned Maintenance.
- Relining of furnace crucibles.
- Management of consumable products associated with production.
- Set up and run powder processing equipment, i.e.: sieving machines and blending machines.
- Testing powders with sieves and other lab equipment.
- Maintaining a clean, organised workspace and promote safe practices.
- Operation of an overhead crane.
- Experience within industrial/manufacturing operating environments.
- A mechanical, technical knowledge and ability.
- Experience in equipment maintenance.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Pro-active mind-set with the ability to work autonomously where required.

PRODUCTION OPERATIVE
This is a unique opportunity to work and learn new skills in an exciting, growing industry. Metal powders are used in many applications including 3D metal printing, and the demand is growing year on year.
For this reason, we are looking for a Production Operative to join our growing Team.
Job overview: The Production Operative is part of the team responsible for locating and loading feedstocks prior to manufacture in our gas atomiser. After manufacture the operative is then responsible for sieving, blended and packing the powder prior to shipment.
Main responsibilities and duties
- Working with the Production Team to fulfil production orders for metal powder
