WWII Spitfire Coin Collaboration

Recently, we were lucky enough to work on a project close to the hearts of our owners and a Commonwealth mint first!

The WWII commemorative coins below feature an extraordinary inlay, which has been created from the engine cowling of a Mk-XVI Spitfire which took to the skies to defend Britain during the war. Signifying the 70th anniversary of the Spitfire’s last operational mission, PSI developed a process of taking parts of the British WWII aircraft and successfully atomising into a fine powder, this was then inlayed into solid 22 carat gold coins. The metal was sourced from a Mk-XVI Spitfire (SM234) which first entered service on 1st November 1944 and was flown in 602 Squadron of the RAF during the war.

Our collaboration on this process allowed us to maintain as much of the original Spitfire cowling as possible during the atomisation process, being sympathetic towards the material and historical significance of the powder we were creating. This project was a true first with linking the importance of the Spitfire SM234 during the war and a commemorative collection of coins from the British mint. We’re very proud to have been a part of this collaboration.

These coins will provide collectors and history enthusiasts with a unique piece of history, and can be purchased from Hattons of London: https://hattonsoflondon.co.uk/product/the-2024-britains-wwii-aircraft-legends-gold-fractional-sovereign-set/

Later on this year, we are aiming to send our director Bill, a trained pilot, into the skies with one of these gold coins! Check back with us in the autumn for part 2 of this coin’s journey.
